Fix it yourself

Simple things you can safely check before calling. If it doesn't work, we're a call away.

Safety first: turn the power off before touching your A/C. Never open the electrical panel cover or the inside of the outdoor unit. If you smell burning, see sparks, or a breaker keeps tripping, turn it off and call us.

Unclog the A/C drain line

15 min + 30 min wait

Signs: water around the indoor unit, a musty smell, or the A/C shut itself off.

Time: 15 min + 30 min wait You'll need: 1 cup white vinegar, a wet/dry vac (optional)
  1. Turn the A/C off at the thermostat.
  2. Find the drain line: a white PVC pipe coming out of the indoor unit. Most have a T-shaped vent with a cap near the unit.
  3. Take the cap off and slowly pour in 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait 30 minutes.
  4. Pour in a cup of warm water to flush it.
  5. Outside, find where the pipe ends (usually near the outdoor unit or the house wall). If water still won't flow, hold a wet/dry vac hose tight over the end and run it for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Wipe out any water in the drain pan under the unit. Put the cap back and turn the A/C on.

In Florida's humidity, pour vinegar in every 1–2 months to keep it clear. Don't mix vinegar with bleach, and don't use plumbing drain cleaners.

Call us if: Water keeps backing up, there's a stain on the ceiling, or the pipe is cracked. (305) 842-0295

Change the air filter

5 min

A dirty filter makes the system work harder, cool less and freeze up.

Time: 5 min You'll need: A new filter in the right size
  1. Turn the system off.
  2. Find the filter: behind a return grille on a wall or ceiling, or in a slot on the indoor unit.
  3. Pull the old one out and check the size printed on its edge (for example 20x25x1).
  4. Slide the new one in with the arrow pointing toward the unit, the way the air flows.
  5. Write the date on the edge so you know when it's due.

Change it every 1–3 months. Every month if you have pets or work is going on in the house.

Call us if: The filter gets dirty in just a few weeks, or there's a lot of dust coming from the vents. (305) 842-0295

A/C won't turn on: check these first

10 min

Most "dead" A/C calls turn out to be a setting, a battery or a tripped breaker.

Time: 10 min You'll need: Fresh thermostat batteries
  1. Thermostat: set it to Cool and at least 3 degrees below the room temperature. If the screen is blank or dim, change the batteries.
  2. Breakers: the indoor and outdoor units each have their own breaker. A tripped one sits in the middle. Push it fully OFF, then back ON. Only try this once.
  3. Outdoor disconnect: check the switch or pull-out block in the gray box next to the outdoor unit is on.
  4. After power comes back, wait 5 minutes. The outdoor unit has a built-in delay that protects the compressor.
  5. Still nothing? Check the drain pan. A full pan trips a safety switch that shuts the A/C off (see Unclog the drain line).

Write down what the thermostat shows (any error code or blinking light). It helps us fix it faster.

Call us if: The breaker trips again. Don't keep resetting it, that can damage the system. (305) 842-0295

Ice on the pipes or the unit

2–4 hours to thaw

Ice means the coil got too cold, usually from low airflow.

Time: 2–4 hours to thaw You'll need: Towels
  1. Set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On. This thaws the ice faster.
  2. Put towels down to catch the melting water.
  3. Replace the filter if it's dirty.
  4. Open the vents and move furniture or curtains blocking them. Keep most vents open, even in rooms you don't use.
  5. When all the ice is gone, turn cooling back on.

Never chip the ice off. You can puncture the coil.

Call us if: It freezes up again. That usually means low refrigerant or a fan problem, which needs a technician. (305) 842-0295

Keep the outdoor unit breathing

15 min

The outdoor unit pushes your home's heat outside. Blocked fins mean higher bills.

Time: 15 min You'll need: A garden hose
  1. Turn the power off at the disconnect box next to the unit.
  2. Clear leaves and trim plants back so there's about 2 feet of space all around and 5 feet above.
  3. Rinse the fins gently with a garden hose. No pressure washer, it bends the fins.
  4. Turn the power back on.

Do this a few times a year, and after storms.

Call us if: The fan doesn't spin, the unit is loud or rattling, or the fins are badly bent. (305) 842-0295

An outlet stopped working

5 min

Often a safety outlet (GFCI) tripped. One GFCI can power several other outlets.

Time: 5 min You'll need: Nothing
  1. Look for outlets with TEST and RESET buttons in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage and outside.
  2. Press RESET firmly until it clicks. Check the outlet that stopped working.
  3. Still off? Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once.

Test your GFCIs once a month: press TEST (power cuts off), then RESET.

Call us if: It won't reset, it trips again, the outlet feels warm, buzzes or smells like burning. (305) 842-0295
